Cultured Pearls

Pearls are formed inside of pearl molluscs in following the introduction of a foreign object which creates an irritation and results in we know the final effect of pearling process. The introduction may be accidental in the case of "Natural Pearls" or intentional "Cultured Pearls". The core is first deposited a layer of conchiolin, then a calcium compound with a little 'of aragonite, then one of aragonite with a little 'of calcite. The name given to the third layer is nacre. The higher the thickness, due to the length of the cultivation, the greater the value of the pearl. The cultured pearls can be produced in both salt water (variety of higher quality) in freshwater (Freshwater Pearl). They can be round or irregularly shaped (baroque pearl onions).

Pearl Quality Evaluation

  • TYPES OF PEARLS

    The cultured pearls size is determined by the diameter measured in millimeters. The Japanese Cultured Pearls have a diameter between 2 and 10 mm, the South Sea Pearls between 10 and 20 mm. At the same characteristics, more pearl is great, the greater its value.
  • THE SHAPE

Quality and the Pearl Market
